Music Needs Nonsense Lyrics – A Be-Bop-A-Love-Letter To Rama-Lama-Ding-Songs

“Music is always a creative process that comes from the heart. It’s a feeling, a vibration, that we ride on.” — Maurice White

A little over 10 years ago I heard the (intentionally) dumbest song I’ve ever heard.

My friend has a little house in the woods where we go every once in a while, and he has this dinky little Casio keyboard with preprogrammed songs on it. The sounds are truly horrible.

One night my friend asks my cousin to write some lyrics to one of the songs, and he comes back with this ridiculous nonsense that just flows as fuck.

It’s a combination of “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”, and some of the most memorable nonsense lines like “Be-Bop-A-Lula” and “Tutti Frutti”.

And it’s sung in Finnish.

The thing is that it’s like this drunken stroke of genius. Even if no one understands 99% of the lyrics, it sounds awesome.

When we’re out and start singing it people catch on pretty quick, and by the next chorus they’re able to sing along.

Parental Advisory Explicit Nonsense

Fair warning.

So, some 10 years later I wake up today with the feeling that I really miss this kind of stupid shit. With so much nonsense going on in the world, there’s not enough overtly nonsensical lyrics to reflect it.

I reach out to some of the musicians, songwriters, and producers I know and ask them to start writing more of it.

What do things like “Ba de ya” in Earth Wind & Fire’s “September” really mean? Check out this NPR breakdown of the song: http://www.npr.org/2014/09/19/349621429/the-song-that-never-ends-why-earth-wind-fires-september-sustains

And what about the lyrics to Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”:

“I said a hip hop,
The hippie, the hippie,
To the hip, hip hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.”

That song had such a huge cultural and musical impact on the world that it’s ridiculous.

Step back a couple of decades from that and we have so many Doo Wop and Rock N’ Roll songs with, well, you can take a listen to some gems at the bottom.

I’m not saying that from now on we should only write and listen to nonsense.

I’m just saying that not everything needs to be imbued with deep meaning, and sometimes we need songs that hold up a fun house mirror to society.
