Input & Output – Musings On Masturbatory Pursuits

“It’s an indulgence to sit in a room and discuss your beliefs as if they were a juicy piece of gossip.” — Robert A. Heinlein

When it comes to having the kind of life you want there are two factors: Input and Output.

Input are the things that fill you up with information and knowledge. It’s your education, books, movies, research, listening, etc.

Output is what you put out in the world. It could be writing, painting, speaking, music, and so on.

I feel like we have this weird connection somehow.

Whenever I work with a client who’s having issues it’s usually because the balance is out of whack. Either they’re too focused on their input or they’re too focused on their output.

The problem with having too much focus on your input is that you don’t convert it into something productive.

When you have too much output it tends to become stale or boring. There’s nothing new being brought to the table.

Looking at it, both are kind of masturbatory pursuits. Marry the two and you have sweet, sweet loving.

It’s not so much what you do or what you know. What’s going to shape your life is what you do with what you know.

Actions trump ideas.
