“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.” – Bruce Lee
Every now and then we all need to check in with ourselves to see how we’re progressing, and also to make sure we’re not spending our time doing things that aren’t giving us pleasure.
Don’t get me wrong, boring stuff needs to get done too but to put things in perspective I like to remind myself of something Steve Jobs said:
“I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”
Now, this might sound a little drastic but merely asking these kinds of questions can gives us greater clarity in what it is we want to achieve.
Perhaps we’ve gotten too much of something or too little of something else. Perhaps our priorities have to change for a while as we direct our focus elsewhere in our lives.
What happened for me today was that I was getting ready to write an article that I’d been planning since last week. Unfortunately, I just felt “ugh” about it all.
I could’ve gone through with it, but as I asked myself that question the answer was clear.
I needed to change it up.
So, instead I wanted to write this little thing. This is mainly something I’m writing for me, but also in case someone else out there is going through some similar kind of burn out or something.
You’re not alone.
Another thing that I noticed that I need to change is that lately I’ve been taking too few days “just for me”.
What I mean by that is that my regular morning routine’s slipped. I haven’t taken that hour to make sure I fill myself up and audit what I want to accomplish for myself.
Instead it’s been just eating breakfast and checking what the world wants from me.
Now, that’s a great way in case I’m unsure of what to do for others.
However, when it comes to doing more of what you’re both good at and enjoy doing for yourself? Not necessarily.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the doing of things that we forget about ourselves.
We really need to remember to take of our own needs first before we jump in willy nilly doing things for others.
For this reason I’m going to take tomorrow as a “just for me”-day.
When’s the last time you took a day just for you?
Have a kick-ass ₢eative day!
