IMHO – Top 10 Songs of 2014

“We like lists because we don’t want to die.” – Umberto Eco

So, it’s that time of year again. Time to summarize the experiences we’ve had and yada-yada-yada. I just like making lists and will probably be making one for books, movies, documentaries, videogames etc until 23:59:59 on december 31st so get used to it!

Nevertheless, here’s my take on the songs that made up 2014 for me!

Miley Cyrus' Tongue Slide

Things that made you go “Whiiieh!” in 2014.

10. Dynatron – “37 Million Horsepower” from “Throttle Up EP”. Oh, god this has been a GREAT year for Synthwave!
9. Pharrell Williams – “Happy” from “G I R L”. It was inescapeable. And who’d wanna escape it? Well, atleast before the millionth time you heard it.
8. Weird Al Yankovic – “Tacky” from “Mandatory Fun”. Was a nice break from the previous song.
7. Mitch Murder – “Breakazoid” from “Interceptor”. More synthwave please.
6. Taylor Swift – “Blank Space” from “1989”. It was really cool to hear the outtakes from her idea recordings with Max Martin commenting in the background.
5. Todd Terje – “DeLorean Dynamite” from “It’s Album Time”. That lovely 80’s jam!
4. Electric Youth – “Best Thing” from “Innerworld” (Yeah, yeah it’s a re-release of a 2012 song, it still counts!)

Before jumping into the top 3 i’d like to make some mentions about songs or artists that really surprised me this year.

Shocked Cat

Say whuuut!?!

Jamie Lynn Spears was a pleasant surprise with her EP “The Journey”. Great songs and well performed. I was really impressed. It wasn’t enough to warrant a place here but very promising. Hope she goes in for it next year, it could turn out great!

TVXQ’s album “Tense” didn’t hold up to competition but was a great start for me to the musical year of 2014. Well worth taking time to check out anyway for some good K-Pop.

U2’s “Songs of Innocence” just popping up on devices unannounced. Aaaand… Delete. No, it wasn’t that bad really but it wasn’t that good either IMHO.

Taylor Swift heading for the hill with Spotify in hot pursuit. Well, that turned out great. Hope they resolve it next year!

And now for the top 3 songs!

Three's A Crowd

Look, there’s three of ’em. Don’t read too much into it. It’s just horse butts.

3. MisterWives – “Reflections” from “Reflections”. Remember the night I heard it, I freaked the hell out.
2. Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk” from “Uptown Special”. Looking forward to the full album release from Ronson in 2015, this makes the ol’ booty shake!
1. Chromeo – “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)” from “White Women”. The whole damn album was sweet as hell, other songs of note were ” Check. It. Out!

Hope you found something worth diving into and here’s hoping for an amazing 2015 in music!
