“Everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” – Sylvia Plath
Ever had a feeling in your gut that says “GO! DO IT!” but something else gets in the way? You start THINKING about it? All the doubts, fears and excuses crawl out and say: “Whoa Nelly! What. The. Hell. Are you doing?!”.
I recently listened to a great audiobook called “One More Thing” by B.J Novak. There was a story in it called “The Girl Who Gave Great Advice” (played by Katy Perry!) that really hit home. Without giving away anything of the story it just shows that we all know inside ourselves what’s right. But most of the time we don’t listen to that and instead listen to all the stupid excuses why we shouldn’t do go for what we want.
You know that sensation of having “butterflies in your stomach”? Well, there’s a reason for it! The gut actually has more than 100 million neurons. This is more than we have in our spinal cord or peripheral nervous system.
Another fact is that 95% of our serotonin is located in the gastrointestinal tract. Now that’s some good shit! In case you’re wondering, yes, this pun was very much called for. This means that a lot of our emotions are actually sent from our gut to our brain!
The work that i’ve done with artists so far has been really rewarding. To see people grow and get over the things that are holding them back is amazing. The work and process they have to go through is hard.
I was working with a guy who described his work on an EP as his “white whale”. It was easy to see that he really wanted to make something great. When we met he’d been working on it for, let’s just say, too long. The thing was, the songs were great. All he had to do was trust the material.
A couple of months had passed since our last meeting when I saw a post that the EP had been released. I was so happy! Happy and proud. Happy and proud that he’d finally chosen to share his music with the world.
I loved the cover of the EP. It was a white whale. That said it all. He’d overcome his white whale.
There’s a lot of things holding us back. Fear of failure. Fear of being judged. Fear of not living up to the expectations. I know what it takes to put it out there. It takes guts.
Start listening to your gut. It might be telling you more than you think.
Here are some gut punching quotes to get you going!
“The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That’s what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they’ll go through the pain no matter what happens.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger
“True champions aren’t always the ones that win, but those with the most guts.” – Mia Hamm
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” – Dan Gable
