“Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” – Dr. Seuss
Finally! It’s bright outside up here in the north until around 8PM!
Now the neighbourhood kids are out and about making up games and wreaking your general havoc.
I met a close friend of mine earlier today and it got to me a bit. She came by and just wanted to say hello but I could tell that there was something bothering her. Well, we took a walk and the more she talked I realized that she had gotten so… Involved. She’s an amazing singer and songwriter but man… Where was the FUN?!
Sometimes we need to go overboard with one aspect of our lives before we realize we need to take a few steps back to the middle.
Anyway, we went into her studio and just talked things over. We set up her plan for the EP and talked about what she really wanted to do with it. The things she wanted to do and that were important to her. Everything that wasn’t fun she could improve or leave to others. And just talking I could see that joy and excitement return to her.
When we get so absorbed with all the minutiae of making music we tend to forget the most critical factor. Frickin’ FUN! Hard work and taking things seriously in all honor but jeez, we’re one of the few industries where we can actually get paid to have fun. Isn’t that awesome? “How was work today honey?”, “FUN!” period.
Now this isn’t easy to sustain. It needs to ebb and flow and we also need to be reminded about the balance. We should also be kinder towards ourselves when we slip up and have too much fun or too much work. Just acknowledge it for what it is and move on and try to see it sooner next time.
I know i’ve been guilty of overindulging in the following: Work, music, alcohol, school, videogames, books, sleeping, being awake, overeating, undereating… Well, that’s enough fun for now!
If you feel stuck in a rut try this out! You know those things you thought were fun to do as a kid? Try doing ’em, they still might be! Load up your creative rifle and use it as funpowder!
