“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela
First off, i’m taking a break from writing this weekend.
The reason is that I set a challenge for myself for new years. I promised that throughout january i’d be writing about things that I thought were interesting or might be of use for other people.
Also, I wanted to see if I could. If there was a voice there somewhere that wanted to come out. And it did, but it wasn’t easy.
Every time I took the time to sit down and write the same stuff popped up in my mind:
– You’re not going to write anything of use, what’s the point?
– People won’t read that, why would they care?
– This is the day you’ll run out of ideas.
– Your thoughts aren’t interesting or original.
– You’re not prepared enough, you’ll fail miserably etc. etc.
Luckily for me i’ve had the chance to see other people go through it and I knew what it was. Reptilian brain nonsense.
I felt that insecurity, acknowledged it and did it anyway. I didn’t “conquer” it. It’s still there, even though it’s a bit quieter now. I doubt that it’ll ever go away.
Sometimes we’ll put out crap, I know I felt like “Ugh, well that’s a steaming pile of something…” several times during these weeks.
It’s clear that a lot of people feel the same. And it’s ok. As long as we don’t let it dictate our actions.
We might have to fight it every day for the rest of our lives and everytime we do we’ll be glad we did.
I got great feedback from people and that gave me a feeling of relief. A kind of affirmation that what I did wasn’t wasted.
But even if nobody gives us encouragement or thanks us we should do the things we want to do.
And what I want to do this weekend is to put other things in my writing time slot.
Keep singing even when nobody’s listening. Keep dancing even when there’s no music. Keep doing what you love and love will lead the way.
Some quotes to save the weekend!
“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” – Bill Cosby
“To fight fear, act. To increase fear – wait, put off postpone.” – David Joseph Schwartz
“We are afraid of the enormity of the possible.” – Emile M. Cioran
“I think we all have blocks between us and the best version of ourselves, whether it’s shyness, insecurity, anxiety, whether it’s a physical block, and the story of a person overcoming that block to their best self. It’s truly inspiring because I think all of us are engaged in that every day.” – Tom Hooper
